Editorial standards
One standard across every title. These are the rules our newsrooms work under.
Verification first
We verify before we publish, using original sources wherever possible. We do not invent facts, quotations, sources, statistics, or events, and we do not state as established fact what we cannot verify.
Four principles
Our standards follow the tradition of the Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics, organized around four principles.
Seek truth and report it
Take responsibility for the accuracy of our work. Verify information before releasing it. Use special care when dealing with juveniles, victims of crimes, and sources who are vulnerable.
Minimize harm
Balance the public's need for information against potential harm. Treat subjects of coverage with respect. Consider the long-term implications of publication.
Act independently
Answer to no interest but our readers. Reporters do not take positions on the matters they cover. Advertisers have no influence over editorial decisions, and sponsored content is always labeled.
Be accountable and transparent
Correct errors promptly and visibly. Label opinion as opinion. Explain our editorial decisions when asked, and hold ourselves to these promises loudly when we fall short.
News and opinion
News coverage and opinion are strictly separate. Editorials, columns, and letters are labeled as opinion and signed by their authors. Reporting never campaigns for candidates or causes.
Sponsored content
Advertising and sponsored content are always labeled and always distinguishable from independent editorial coverage. A sponsor's message never appears as reporting.
Ownership
Tribune Publications owns and operates every title in our portfolio directory. Titles may carry the line "A Tribune Publications publication" where appropriate.
Corrections
When we make an error, we correct it promptly, visibly, and without euphemism. Read our corrections policy.
